Back home from a magical time spent in Gent and Paris. The beauty of these two cities filled my heart again. Paris in the spring is truly magical. The roses, irises and tulips were in full bloom everywhere. Inspiration for days and a very busy week ahead filled with lots of flowers and baking. I’ll keep you posted in my instastories. Have a great new week everyone. Sending roses and lots of love.

Paris. I took a little break in between weeks of wedding cakes and more, to visit Gent and Paris the other week with my family. (More in stories) Back in Amsterdam again I hit the ground running, but my heart is full of all the beauty we were so fortunate to see. Paris is a dream and to be able to see it with our children, who saw this city for the first time, was more than I ever hoped for.
I had seen this restaurant before but thanks to my dear neighbor @panos_chasapis.eu I got the address. Panos and I had great conversations before I left. We spoke about good food, racism, family, photography, beauty and of course flowers among other things. Instagram can sometimes feel like an escape where we forget about hardships in the world. But we both agreed that as long as we keep these conversations going the awareness can make a difference.
Another week of baking and sugar flower making for me. I need some time to work myself through deliveries on time but I promise to share more of my work by the end of this week. Up next a few roses from Saturday’s flower market. The romance from Paris must have gotten a hold on me. Have a lovely Sunday and great new week everyone. Hope you get to spent it with friends or if you’re lucky, sweet neighbors.

Happy Sunday from my home to yours. This week has been one of the most delightful weeks in a long time. A class for the sweetest traveler all the way from Austin Texas, recordings for a French broadcasting company, tea with visitors from South Korea and a wedding cake for New Yorkers celebrating in Amsterdam. We had our first night out in two years attending a concert from my favorite Portuguese Fado singer, Mariza. I had longed for days like these and savor every moment. The biggest gift this week though came from our daughter (10). She was chosen by her classmates as the best debater and was sent off to a semi final contest on Tuesday. Monday night she barely slept because she was too nervous.
At breakfast, the day of the contest, she expressed her fears. This type of fear is real but we also said that we had every faith and that she should just be herself. How do I do that? ‘Be myself’ she asked? Don’t worry about mistakes. Get comfortable and try to enjoy how far you came. Listen to your hart and your mind and answers will follow.
Although she didn’t win at first she came home elated. I can’t even tell you what this meant for me. This wasn’t about her winning this round. In my mind she had already won. Just a year ago she had speech therapy for her stutter. This moment was a personal victory. She took the stage despite her fears, there was no stutter. On Friday the debate committee (Discussiëren Kun Je Leren) went to her school and surprised our daughter during class with confetti. She has been given a wildcard for the finale. I cried from happiness for her. She perfected her imperfections with tons of perseverance.
Happiness from a week passed, looking forward to the next. Have a lovely Sunday and great new week everyone.

Sugar ranunculus. What do you find the most difficult flower, frequently asked. There is no such thing as a difficult flower for me. There will always be flowers impossible to recreate like dandelions but difficult no. Most time consuming a better phrase. Ranunculus with its endless petals one of those. Rows and rows of sugar petals. I’ve lost count at some point. Worth it though. This ranunculus found its way to a cake for a wedding that was postponed for two years because of the pandemic. I’m so happy for all who had to wait and finally got to celebrate.
Weddings in full swing and planning parties. That Saturday feeling back again. More sugar flowers in my stories. Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Happy Sunday and a wonderful Easter everyone. Life in Amsterdam is back to how we once knew it. Spring is in full bloom with plenty of visitors to admire. These are the first days of a holiday weekend without restrictions. I can still remember how I longed for normal. With everything happening the long-awaited new normal feels bittersweet. Thinking of everyone struggling hoping for peace. Sending love and light to all.

Happy sunday, saying hello after some time away. Work and family life absorbing most of my days. My son had a minor surgery and is doing well now. We also had to prepare his school list. Anyone familiar with the Amsterdam lottery and matching school system knows how grueling this process is. Unfortunately the outcome not what we hoped for. But like most things in life we accept, adapt and look for the bright side when feeling gloom.
The war in Ukraine always on my mind. The heartbreak, suffering and pain unbearable to witness but we can’t look away.
I’m struggling to find the right words when the world feels different. What I do know is that we have to hold on to those moments of light. Giving up on hope is just darkness. I have been following @chefjoseandres from @wckitchen on Twitter recently and the work he and his organization with thousands of volunteers do in Ukraine and elsewhere is incredible. He was one of the first, on the ground delivering meals in Bucha. Give donate if you can. Every amount no matter how small helps.
Bright, warm ranunculus and tulips. Have a lovely Sunday and great new week everyone. Hold on to hope, hold on to light.

A week of holiday in the Netherlands. Our daughter has read almost every book about Anne Frank and she had asked us many times if we could please visit the Anne Frank House. The Anne Frank House is located only a few streets from our house. Although a 5 min walking distance I had never been inside. I never wanted this significant visit to be rushed or squeezed in between daily obligations or reduce it to ‘just another trip.’ You have to plan your visit well in advance because (thankfully) there are more request than open slots. This week felt like a suitable time. After making our reservations a month ago we visited Anne’s and her families hiding place on Wednesday. The Dutch learn much about WWII and the Holocaust. Anne’s story most certainly in everyone’s heart and mind but to actually see and experience her hiding place was more intense than I ever imagined. I could tell that although both my children had read her story, this felt different. There was an emptiness all day that stayed with us when we got home. The next day on Thursday we woke up to the news of the war in Ukraine. How do you explain war to your children? For the second time in one week we had to explain evil. Anger and sadness once again washing over me.
Flowers feel so futile at this moment in time when there is so much sadness and heartbreak. Sunflowers for support for Ukraine. You inspire us all with your strength and bravery.
Sending much love to all.

Happy Sunday from my home to yours. A week of Spring break and we are home. After traveling for more than 3 weeks to Thailand end of December and half of January, we knew this week in February would be a staycation. The strongest wind in over 4 years accompanied us this week. We are still not out of the woods but home feels warm and safe. We bake cookies and popcorn and watch movies while we hear the wind howling. Titles we have seen but new to our children. Did you know it is 24 years Titanic was released? Time flies so fast, I can still remember seeing it for the first time on the big screen. Such fun to see it with our children. They loved it and were so impressed although they screamed oh noooo and eeewww…(!!!)…when they saw the hand against the steamy window.
Life is about choices and with most of their friends skiing, our children know we have to find beauty and fun in the comforts of our home. Not always easy, because they are kids and like most suffer from shortness of memory (when convenient) but in the end they always understand. We have some visits planned next week close to home, I will try and share some highlights as I go. It is cold and grey outside, flowers the answer always. Have a lovely Sunday and beautiful new week everyone. Sometimes a movie, some flowers and cookies is all you need.

Sugarflowers to wish you a happy Saturday. We are still on the road. Thank you so much for all of you joining me. In my instastories Koh Phi Phi (pronounced Pee Pee) The reason we took this trip. I longed to visit over the summer when we were in Phuket but it was still closed after more than three years. Rightfully so as the island had gotten overcrowded and polluted. March 2020 changed everything. And Nature was given time to heal. I read in the news somewhere in September that there were plans of opening up in January. I mentioned this to my husband and said.. what if? But we were just there he said. I knew he was right but something inside me kept pushing. I know, I know…. We have work to do and this is a crazy thought but what if… a girl can dream right? By October I mentioned it again and this time my husband knew I was serious. We took the risk and booked early flights not knowing how the world would look like three months later. No fancy hotels just the basics. All I wanted for Christmas was Koh Phi Phi. I feel so fortunate to be here in Phuket and I’m so happy we took the plunge. These weeks have been beyond my wildest dreams. I don’t often do these sorts of things but when I do it helps me to think: what is the worst that can happen? Often the good outweighs the worst. My wildest dream in my instastories. I have posted Phuket so far on my page in highlights. Only a few more days until this adventure is over. What a ride. Back to sugarflowers soon. Life is sweet.

Happy Sunday from my home to yours. There was a rumor when I went to the market yesterday for my weekly flowers and groceries. A hard lockdown as of next morning. For some reason trying to entertain this unpleasant thought it made me focus on all the sunniest, colorful roses offered. I know being surrounded with bright colors will keep us merry in once again unprecedented times. The announcement in the evening confirmed. The Netherlands is in a hard lockdown as of today. Not enough words to describe the sadness by and for many in these days so close to Christmas. Choosing who or not to visit because of safety another difficult one. I know Christmas is once again not the celebration many had hoped it would be. A challenging time for some, don’t hesitate to reach out or to sent that message. A few comforting, warm words can make such a difference. One thing I know for sure, this too shall pass. Above all, be safe everyone. Sending roses and all my love. Have a lovely Sunday and happy healthy holidays.

Happy Sunday from my home to yours. Fall flowers in Delftware vase. Blue and white will always be a favorite but I also have a weakness for red and gold Imari Delftware especially now as we are getting closer to Christmas. Roses, dahlias, chrysanthemums, scabiosa and…bittersweet.
An emotional week for me this week. One of our neighbors has moved. Not out of town and we will see them again but not having them close will change things. Listed as “rescue parents”, they were the ones to receive a call from school incase there was an emergency with our children. No such call was ever made but the thought of them being there just in case was incredibly reassuring. Birthdays or Christmas, they would leave gifts in the hall. I know this wasn’t goodbye but I’m always reminded how it isn’t only family that can give you a sense of connection. It is true what they say. Better to have a good neighbor than a distant cousin. Of all the things in our lives it is the friendships we make that are the most valuable.
Wishing you a happy Sunday and a wonderful new week everyone. Happiness is sometimes close to home.

Happy Sunday from my home to yours. Cake and flowers because we always have something to celebrate. Is it me or does time fly faster in the month of December. I can’t believe we are in the last month of the year. The scent of tangerine this week made me stop and inhale deeper. I can not tell you the relief I felt having my sense of smell returning. There is a little bit more every day. I never knew what life would be like without experiencing fragrance. I never knew how deeply our emotions are associated with smell. To be able to smell the people you love, your favorite food or the crispness of a morning outside. Now that it is returning I couldn’t be more grateful. Although I feel it every day, I don’t use the word grateful often because of fear it will lose its significance. Most of the time I will say happy or excited or thrilled instead. But often times using those words, I actually mean grateful. There is no substitute for describing how I feel other than that I’m immensely grateful for having my sense of smell and my health back. Have a lovely Sunday and happy healthy new week everyone. Don’t wait for special days or festive occasions. Have that piece of cake. Time flies. We are here to celebrate every day.

Happy Sunday from my home to yours. Thank you so much for all your well wishes on my post from last week. If we have our health we have so much to be thankful for. Playing catch up for time lost with work I’m only posting flowers from Saturday market this week. Baking and sugar flowers will resume to normal as of next week. I’m feeling better every day now and so is the rest of my family. I hope everyone celebrating had a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving. One of the things I have found so heartwarming when we were ill and bound to our home was the kindness of friends and others like freshly baked, warm croissants left on our doorstep and offerings of help. I’m always in awe of my children’s teachers but after these past weeks I love them even more. They have been so incredibly helpful to make sure our children didn’t fall behind in school and keep them from loneliness. Every morning they were able to log in and attend the class. Being able to join their friends and class mates has been a total rescue for them and for me. It takes a very big heart, teachers are doing a Herculean job. They say there is no substitute for the virtual world but modern technology these days does make all our life better and more beautiful. I have lost my sense smell but I noticed that it is coming back little by little. Roses this week so I can train my senses back to health.
Have a lovely Sunday and beautiful new week everyone. Thank you so much for all your kindness. It means the world to me.
